This Eastern Mediterranean Mamma Mia cruise traverses through some of the most iconic destinations featured in the hit film, Mamma Mia. Scale the luscious landscape of Skopelos until you reach the breathtakingly beautiful church located in Agios Ioannis; this white-washed chapel stands proud 100 metres above the sea, providing panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Visit the culture rich Skiathos harbour and immerse yourself in the Mamma Mia experience.
The Greek islands of Skopelos and Skiathos feature heavily throughout the Mamma Mia film, with carefully chosen locations creating the desired romantic effect. Now, you can visit these destinations for yourself on board a romantic Star Clippers sailing through the Eastern Mediterranean. The aptly named ‘Mamma Mia’ itinerary, which departs out of Piraeus (Athens), will see you travel to a range of Greek island destinations aboard the Star Flyer including the islands of Skiathos and Skopelos.
Skiathos is a charming island, offering plenty of golden beaches that are ideal for either relaxing or a spot of swimming. With more than 60 beaches to choose from, you may be spoilt for choice with the options available. One place you may want to head to is the old harbour, near Bourtzi, which played a part in Mamma Mia. This is where Sam’s race with Harry took place, with the two characters running to reach the boat that would take them to the neighbouring island of Kalokairi. Skiathos is also home to the clock tower where Sophia posts the wedding invitations.
Several locations on the island of Skopelos featured throughout Mamma Mia including some of the key scenes. Kastani Beach offers a fine place to relax, with turquoise waters and soft golden sands combining to offer the perfect place to relax. This is where Tanya sang ‘Does your Mother Know’, as well as also being the location where Sophie and Sky sing both ‘Lay all your Love on Me’ and ‘I Have a Dream’.
Elsewhere, you can discover Nisi Glisteri, which is the clifftop where ‘Our Last Summer’ was performed. You can also visit the Agios Ioannis Prodomos Monastery – one of the island’s most beautiful landmarks and the location in which the wedding scene was filmed. A short 105-step climb from the Agios Ioannis Beach will take you to the small chapel, where you can also enjoy mesmerising views out to sea.
Enjoy the romance of sailing on board Star Flyer in a relaxed atmosphere with high standards of service provided by an attentive crew.
Star Clippers Experience
Day by day itinerary
Fly to Athens and take your included private transfer to the dock to embark Star Flyer for your Mamma Mia cruise
Walking in the shadow of the Acropolis in the Agora, you can almost hear the voices of Plato, Socrates and Aristotle arguing about who was the greatest philosopher. In the soaring, subtly curved Doric columns of the Parthenon you see the masterful hand of Pericles, Athens' greatest general and builder. And in the ethereally graceful bodies of the Karyatids supporting the porch of the Erectheum, you behold the beauty of the immortals. Ancient Athens, the birthplace of democracy and epicenter of western civilization, is a city for all eternity.
Star Flyer, Star Clippers Cruises
Each Star Clippers ship offers a traditional and elegant way to see the world. Feel the wind fill the sails and gently carry you from one gorgeous destination to the next. During your time on board, you can choose to relax on a sun lounger or cool off in one of the pools on the top deck, while more adventurous passengers may enjoy the opportunity to climb the rigging or even have a go at steering the ship. Alternatively, you can wander the interior areas of the ship and discover relaxing lounges, a revitalising spa (Royal Clipper only) and a peaceful library.
Dikkili is a sleepy little beach town, authentically Turkish. The harbour is lined with open-air restaurants and shops with local food specialties. Nearby, Bergama is worth a visit especially for its two main monuments: the Acropolis perched at a height of 280 metres and the Asklepion.
Old port, Myrina city, Lemnos island, Greece
It was Zeus who hurled Hephaestus from Mt. Olympus to land on Limnos, leaving the god of metalworking with a permanent limp. Perhaps he was nursed to health by excellent red and white wines (fortified or not) grown on Limnos volcanic soils. The town of Myrina sits under the winding white ramparts of the Kastro, built in 1186. But even earlier ruins - one of most ancient sites in Greece - lie in nearby Poliohni.
The most sophisticated of the Sporades, abounds with trendy shops where barely-clad visitors taking time off from the nearby beaches shop for expensive wisps of clothing and jewelry. Go a few blocks inland and you'll find charming flower-decked houses and gardens overflowing with fruit trees.
Head to the old harbour, near Bourtzi, which played a part in the film Mamma Mia. This is where Sam’s race with Harry took place, with the two characters running to reach the boat that would take them to the neighbouring island of Kalokairi. Skiathos is also home to the clock tower where Sophia posts the wedding invitations.
Kastani "Mamma Mia" beach, island of Skopelos, Greece
A verdant island blessed with olive, almond and fruit trees. As you sail into the bay surrounding Skopelos town, it reminds you of a giant Greek amphitheatre. 120 churches nestle beneath the ruins of the Venetian castle, and two convents and a monastery cling to hills above the bay.
Several locations on the island of Skopelos featured throughout Mamma Mia including some of the key scenes. Kastani Beach offers a fine place to relax, with turquoise waters and soft golden sands combining to offer the perfect place to relax. This is where Tanya sing ‘Does your Mother Know’, as well as also being the location where Sophie and Sky sing both ‘Lay all your Love on Me’ and ‘I Have a Dream’.
It's barely a hop, skip and a jump from the Argolid Peninsula to the island of Poros, sometimes called Kaválria. Greece's naval academy is here, and visitors can hear the cadets' marching band every morning. The views from the Temple of Poseidon are eternal, which may be why the doomed orator Demosthenes chose to end his life here. Take a water taxi to Galatas for excursions to the fragrant lemon groves of Lemonodhássos, or venture inland to ancient Troezen or Epidauros.
