There are few better ways to experience the lower course of Indochina’s greatest river than in the beautiful River Orchid, a cruiser crafted in French colonial style that plies its trade on the Mekong River.

Elegant wood panelling and shaded decking feature heavily, and pink orchids bloom from vases everywhere – enjoying a pastis on the roof bar will make passengers sink back into the heady days of French Indochine.

The ship starts its scenic journey in Vietnam’s bustling Mekong delta, and passes floating markets before heading upriver into Cambodia and the Tonlé Sap. Thoughtful itineraries planned by Uniworld mean that despite Siem Reap and other major sights lying well away from river access, guests are able to enjoy them anyway.

The restaurant on board provides guests with panoramic views as well as a delicious succession of meals. Generally breakfast and lunch sees a buffet of international options, with a more formal dinner service offering à la carte choices from the French and Vietnamese repertoires.

Like other river cruisers, the River Orchid is limited in terms of onboard entertainment, as this is easily accessible at the places en route.

A massage room on board offers a range of healing and wellness treatments, as well as local massage techniques.

There is a lecture and movie room for cultural displays, but most learning happens during the thoughtful land excursions.

Many guided itineraries are offered, taking in key tourist sights as well as nearby villages where locals perform traditional dances.
