MS Nordnorge (‘Northern Norway’) is the fourth Hurtigruten ship to bear the collective name for the country’s three northernmost counties (Nordland, Troms and Finnmark). The interior is tastefully decorated in art nouveau and art deco style by celebrated Norwegian artists. The ship also starred in the monumental NRK TV documentary Hurtigruten: Minute by Minute, which followed a cruise for the full five and a half days (or 8,040 minutes) of her journey north from Bergen to Kerkenes, which was watched by 3.2 million viewers.
Optional excursions vary between the seasons along this pristine coastline of fjords, inlets, glaciers, islands and natural harbours. In the summer months the Arctic region experiences 24-hour sunlight and midnight whale-watching safaris are a must. Autumn brings spectacular colours and harvest celebrations all along the coast. In the dark winter the magical Northern Lights are the focus of onboard activities and offshore adventures. And spring is a time of extreme contrasts, with snow and ice activities north of the Arctic Circle while the returning sun brings migrating birds and abundant wildflowers in its wake.
Food and Drink
Restaurant, cafe and saloon/bar.
Locally sourced ingredients are a vital part of the onboard dining experience, and the chefs make full use of each voyage’s many stops at large and small ports. A rich variety of fresh produce from land and sea is prepared with a modern twist on age-old traditions. Specialities range from Bergen fish soup, baked Arctic char and red king crab to beer-braised beef, reindeer steak, local cheeses with berry compote and milk pudding with sea buckthorn and aquavit ice cream.
There is musical entertainment on some stretches of the voyage in the bar area but no organised entertainment programme. There are no long days at sea away from the coast, and evenings are geared to relaxation and unwinding after daytime activities.
A wide variety of optional guided excursions immerse passengers in the spectacular landscape, culture and wildlife of the region, including hiking around fjords and glaciers, city walks, Sami feasts, island boat rides, husky sledding, snowmobile rides and Northern Lights viewing.
