Venice to Corfu on Oceania Riviera day 3
Day 3 - Koper
After another good nights sleep I woke refreshed and enjoyed breakfast on the outside terrace of the buffet restaurant. Either the ship is not too full or lots of guests had taken early transfers as there were no queues for the egg station!
We left Riviera and took ourselves on a walking tour of this little town in Slovenia. A mixture of Venetian old town and modern shopping centre on the outskirts. We saw a tourist hop on hop off dolly train and for 2 euros were taken around the town to better see the contrast between old and new.
We left the tour just as a thunderstorm started so were forced into a local wine bar to take shelter and it only seemed reasonable to try out the local brew while we were there.
As the rain stopped we made our way back to the ship and enjoyed lunch once again in the Waves Grill and as the sun then came out were able to relax with a swim. It was comical to watch the pool staff rushing to remove towels and mattresses at the first sign of rain only to replace them 15 minutes later. This happened many times during the afternoon.
This evening the Captain’s welcome cocktail party was held in every bar on the ship with complimentary drinks of your choice served between 5.45 and 8pm.
As I wanted to see the sailaway from Koper I missed his actual speech and in fact did not see him at all during the six days we were on board. Unlike other cruise lines, where the Captain and Officers are always visible during the day and evening walking around and always with time to stop for a brief chat.
Unlike the two previous evenings in Horizons when the lounge was less than a quarter full before dinner, tonight it was heaving!
We ate tonight in Toscana, the Italian restaurant and once again were given a table for two. It is always worth asking when you arrive for your reservation.
All the speciality restaurants are quite beautifully decorated and have plenty of space between tables. We received excellent service and enjoyed a lovely meal of typical Italian dishes.
We did not linger too long this evening as we wanted to see the guest performer Clint Holmes in the Riviera Lounge.
We had been advised on boarding that this cruise had a Jazz theme and we thoroughly enjoyed the performance this evening.
I always find it amazing that guest singers come on board, have never met the band before but after a short rehearsal are able to pull together an outstanding show . This was very well appreciated by a packed theatre.
A short spell of Karaoke was then held in the Horizons Lounge but as not many volunteered to sing this was quickly changed to the band.
Once again we finished with a nightcap in Martinis before retiring to bed.
