Venice to Corfu on Oceania Riviera day 1

Day 1 Embark Oceania Cruises Riviera in Venice

We arrived at the cruise terminal just before our suggested check in time of 1pm and we were on board Riviera within 15 minutes - excellent.

As we had not been able to make any dinner reservations before leaving the UK, we went straight to one of the speciality restaurants and were able to arrange reservations at four of the restaurants. We had to be flexible and could only have a table for two at Red Ginger, the Asian restaurant, on our first evening. For the rest we agreed to sharing a table.

As the sun was shining we made our way to the Terrace Cafe, the buffet restaurant, where we were able to sit outside under a parasol and enjoy a delicious lunch while looking across the port at five other cruise ships in Venice on this day. We quickly decided that we were on the best!

After lunch instead of exploring the ship as we intended, an announcement was made that all staterooms were now ready so we made our way up to our balcony stateroom on deck 8 and were immediately impressed with the size of the room and quality of the decor.

The very spacious bathroom had a separate bath and shower and plenty of storage space. The complimentary toiletries were the ’Oceania’ brand not a well known designer brand!

We had a large king size bed beautifully made with crisp white sheets and duvet and fantastically large pillows. Beyond the bed was a comfortable sofa and large coffee table. Opposite this was the spacious dressing table and on the wall a large flat screen TV. We found that we had access to Sky News for most of the cruise so were able to keep up to date with world events.

The balcony was comfortably furnished with two wicker chairs, with a large padded cushion on each, and a small coffee table.

Our bags had arrived so we quickly unpacked and as the sun was still shining we changed and went up to the pool deck for a swim.

I have to say that it was a pleasure to have a decent sized pool that was suitable for swimming lengths. The salt water filled pool was at a perfect temperature and we followed our swim with some time in the wonderfully warm Jacuzzi.

But the weather was changing and after collecting a cup of tea from the buffet restaurant we went down to our room to change for the evening.

We explored a little more of the Riviera and found the spaciousness of all the public rooms complimented with the beautiful artwork and sculptures everywhere, really fantastic. The design of the ship and guest to space ratio allows for plenty of opportunities to sit and people watch. In all bars and restaurants there were always plenty of waiting staff and at no time did we have to queue to get on or off the ship.

For pre dinner drinks we went into the Horizons Lounge which is situated at the top of the ship facing forward and has wrap around windows allowing a perfect view out. The ’Olympic Duo’ were playing followed by The Andy Band. We enjoyed a Bloody Mary accompanied by a plate of hors doeuvres which we soon realised to leave alone before dinner! On our way down to dinner we saw that it was pouring with rain outside.

Miso Glazed Sea Bass

Red Ginger was fantastic! Every mouthful was sublime. Delicately prepared starters followed by a tasty soup and then a beautifully prepared salad of lobster and avocado - it was all so delicious. We followed this with the Miso Glazed Sea Bass - so tasty and mouthwatering. This was accompanied with Asparagus and Broccoli. The Lamb baked with a 7 spice herb crust was also delicious. We finished with Chocolate and Lemongrass Brulee and a teapot of Ginger and Peach Tea. An excellent first meal on board the Riviera.

Red Ginger Restaurant

By the time we left the restaurant it had stopped raining so we explored the open upper deck and found the tennis court, golf and shuffle board court. Again I was impressed with the amount of open deck space available for sun beds during the day.

We went down to ’Martinis’ for a night cap and enjoyed listening to the resident pianist Adam Kowalski. One of the guests asked if she could sing and we enjoyed a very intimate impromptu concert, her voice was amazing. One of the Sommelliers then sang, it was a perfect end for a lovely first day on the Riviera.
