SS Antoinette River Cruise Blog Day 2

This morning we were in Breisach, Germany, and the tour left at 9am to follow the Alsatian Wine Route. This route winds its way from north to south for 170 kms, below the wooded foothills of the Vosges. The tour went on to Colmar, one of the best-preserved towns in the region, and used to have flourishing wine trade.

I didn’t go on the tour today due to illness, so I spent the day onboard SS Antoinette, exploring the boat.

There were just 4 guests that stayed on board the SS Antoinette today, and after the tour left we set sail for Kehl, where we would meet up with tour at 5pm. The ship still provided a buffet lunch that was good and tasty, and after some hot food I felt much better.

Tonight was the Captains Welcome Cocktail party where we got to meet the officers and ships crew, followed by a port talk for Kehl. We were greeted by the captain and given a glass of champagne, then listened to the port talk for the following day. Due to low water on the river the ships officers have had to re-organise the itinerary, so tomorrow we will be in Strasbourg in the morning and Speyer in the afternoon, effectively doing 2 days in 1

The Captain’s welcome meal was interesting, a crab cake for starter, followed by a consommé soup with a chicken cornel, and for main course I had sun fish on a bed of tagliatelle. The main course was very good, fish cooked well, however the pasta could have been warmer. Dessert was a chocolate fondant that oozed out when cut into. We did mention the luke-warm main course to the headwaiter when he came round to check on us. It’s important to provide feedback and after all that’s why we are here.

After our meal we retired to the main lounge where there was a local entertainer performing on the accordion - very French and he played such classics as Frere a Jacques and some popular Can-Can melodies! Then it was off to bed ad the next day was pretty full on - off by 8.30am and out all day!
