Northern Lights Cruises

The Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis are best seen from within the Arctic Circle, however can sometime been viewed as far south as Scotland. Northern Norway has claimed itself as being the best place to see the lights and ideally you need very dark conditions. Other places to see the lights are Iceland, Sweden, Finland or Canada and Alaska.

Out at sea, away from light pollution on the land, offers a perfect vantage point and there are a number of cruises that sail around Norway offering Northern Lights cruises.

The best time of year to view the Northern Lights is between September and April, and from 5pm on clear, cloudless nights. The lights are created by fast-moving, electrically charged particles that are ejected by the sun. The Earth’s magnetic field drives these towards the Poles and their varying colours are a result of the different gases in the upper atmosphere. As the Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon they cannot be guaranteed to be seen.

Northern Lights Cruises

Hurtigruten operates a fleet of passenger ships that sails up and down the Norwegian coast visiting 34 ports. They also have a “Northern Lights promise” that means that if the Lights do not make an appearance, then you will be offered a free six or seven day cruise to take later.

Book a 12-day Classic Round Voyage from Bergen to Kirkeness and back to take advantage of this offer- with fares from £899 pp. You must travel before 31 March 2017.

You can enhance your enjoyment of your Northern Lights cruise by taking one of the special sailings that feature Astronomy or feature expedition leaders. Hurtigruten introduced expedition teams on sailings along the Norwegian coast with three ships in 2016 (MS Nordkapp, MS Nordlys and MS Nordnorge) and in 2017, they will have a total of seven ships with dedicated expedition teams on board; a group of experienced people who will make sure you get the most out of your sailing along the Norwegian coast. A custom made program containing lectures and presentations, special on-board activities both inside and out on deck, as well as several hikes are available. Hurtigruten’s expedition team will provide you with interesting lectures on subjects such as biology, history, geology and science.
