Mozart Danube River Cruise Review Day 6
Day 6 Vienna
Today we were in Vienna, and the ship is docked close to the city, at Handelskai, pier 8. It’s quite a busy port, with lots of river cruise ships in, and we were docked 3 deep at one point. This morning we had a city tour, which was mainly just a bus ride with all the sights along the ring road pointed out. We did stop at the amazing buildings of Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Taking his inspiration from nature, these buildings are apartments offered by the council for local residents and are all different colours. Inside there are communal places for the residents to meet up and socialise. The building is designed with a grass roof, trees on top, uneven floors and curved walls - think Gaudi-esque. Then it was on to the main cathedral , Stephensdom, right in the heart of the city. We had free time here and wandered about before making our way back to the bus and back to the ship. Personally I would have liked a few more photo stops at key points that were mentioned as we made our way through Vienna.
After lunch (we had a steamed pork dish that was just devine) we had another tour, this time to the magnificent Schonbrunn Palace, home to the Habsburgs royal family until 1918. We had a guided tour of the interior and plenty of free time to explore the expansive gardens. This was a great afternoon out and really enjoyable.
That evening the dinner was served buffet style as there we two evening tours departing, and we had some of the most delicious food of the cruise! As we did not have a tour booked we played cards up on the sun deck with our dining table friends as we watched the night descend on Vienna.
