Mozart Danube River Cruise Review day 5

Day 5 - Bratislava

At breakfast today there was baked beans! Hurrah, so a full English was had, albeit with bratwurst! Today we spent the morning on the river, enjoying the scenery as we made our to Bratislava - the capital of Slovakia and one of the most famous cities on the Danube.

At 11am up on the sun deck we were served Flosshuoven, basically beer and food! This consisted of white sausage, liver meat-loaf and freshly baked pretzels, served with sweet and savoury mustard, it was actually quite nice! All washed down with two complimentary steins of beer! Before arriving we had to go through the largest lock in Slovakia. It produces hydro electricity for the country and raised us 20 metres to meet the rest of the river.

After lunch we had arrived at Bratislava so we boarded our bus and visited the Archbishops Palace and the National Theatre, and then on to the castle, where we had a brilliant view up into Austria and Hungary. We also visited the city hall, St Michaels Gate, and enjoyed a good walking tour of this really lovely capital city. As its only 60km from Vienna there is a strong Austrian influence on the architecture. Our guide here, Marketa, was excellent. After the tour we stopped for a beer, one litre sized steins for just three euros! After that we staggered back to the ship. After dinner that evening, as we were so close to town, we left the ship and walked to the main pedestrian boulevard for a few more drinks and to soak up the Bratislavan atmosphere. Our guests who decided to stay onboard were treated to local classical musicians. Then it was back on board as we sailed at 23:00 - heading to Vienna.
