Meet Captain Luca Manzi of Oceania Cruises
Captain Manzi was born in Chiavari, a small city in the Italian Riviera located ten miles east of Portofino. Since he was very young, Luca has always been fascinated by life at sea and he would observe the fishing boats and small ships moving in and out of Chiavari’s port at every given opportunity.
Graduating from the Cristoforo Colombo Marine Academy in 1986, Manzi attended a Naval Marine Academy near Livorno for a year before serving aboard a minesweeper in the Italian Navy as second in command. However, Manzi soon realised that his real expectation was to sail the world, so after serving for two and a half years, he decided to leave the Italian Navy and pursue a career in the Merchant Navy of working aboard a luxury cruise ship.
He admits that the beginning of his career in the merchant navy was a little more challenging than he had first thought, where he spent six years on cargo ships before reaching the position of Chief Officer, however he never gave up on his dream of working on a luxury cruise ship, and that dream came true in early 1996, when he joined Renaissance Cruises. He worked aboard Renaissance’s ships as a Navigational Officer, Safety Officer and Staff Captain before finally being promoted to Captain of the relatively small and luxurious vessels in 2000. Unfortunately a few years passed and then the popular Renaissance Cruises wa no more. However Captain Manzi always remained hopeful that it would not be for long considering the beauty and design of the Renaissance fleet.
When Oceania Cruises appeared on the horizon with the bold plan of creating a market for these ships, Manzi could not have been more delighted with the idea. During his time with Oceania, he had the pleasure of being in command of all their vessels and strongly believes as Captain that the priority on a cruise ship is the safety and well being of the guests and crew. Today Captain Manzi continues his dream of working for an award-winning luxury cruise line as much as he enjoys being at home with his family where he likes to spend time with his two sons and ride his motorbike.
