DVD review The Three Queens

I have reviewed the official DVD of the Cunard Three Queens Event in celebration of her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee that took place earlier this year.

The DVD opens with some very interesting history on Cunard, from its beginnings in 1839 as mail carrier, to the introduction of transatlantic travel, with the launch of Cunard’s first superliners, Mauritania and Lusitania in 1907, through to the introduction of Queen Mary, the War years and through to today’s modern ships , including the famous Queen Elizabeth II .

There is a great compilation of the naming ceremonies of the current fleet - Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth.

Peter Shanks, managing director of Cunard, is interviewed and recalls the special relationship Cunard has with Her Majesty The Queen, and advises about the planning of the Royal Rendezvous - the meeting of the Queens.

The aerial photography of the three ships arriving is stunning, and the interviews with guests and visitors to the ships are very interesting indeed; including Michael Buerk, Jennie Bond, Esther Rantzen and David Dingle, CEO of Carnival UK.

This DVD offers a great behind-the-scenes insight into the planning of this incredible event, from the logistics of getting the three ships all in Southampton on the same day, to coordinating the port facilities and the daytime and evening events.

This 35 min documentary lends a fascinating insight into the history of Cunard, the planning of the event and of course the event itself and is a must-buy for any Cunard fan or cruise fan in general, with stunning photography and wonderful narration, it’s the next best thing to being there!
