Day 3 Cunard Queen Mary 2 Blog

Last night was the first of five nights that our clocks were moved forward one hour to allow us to arrive back into the UK at the correct time. A bit of a struggle as this seemed to make a late night even later but does avoid the dreaded ’jet lag’ by the time we arrive back in Southampton.

We went to the Kings Court Buffet Restaurant for breakfast, a little less chaotic than our previous visit but I have seen much better layout and signage on other ships of a similar size. I was also surprised that there was no omelette station or fresh rolls, just toast or bagels.

We then went for a walk around the promenade deck. the weather was really lovely, bright sunshine and not much of a breeze. We were able to sit on a couple of loungers with a hot chocolate and do some reading.

Later attended a lecture from one of the three guest lecturers on board. He was from the United Nations and gave a very informative talk about world population. This was followed by a very interesting question and answer session. Considering the number of guests on board this was not very well attended. It will be interesting to see if this is true of some of the other lectures.

Went back out on deck but it was now rather chilly so went into Kings Court for a warming bowl of soup then found a quiet corner in the Commodore Club to relax and read.

Another visit to Illuminations to see the second film that they were showing on this cruise. We discovered that they would be repeating these two films throughout the cruise so we would have delayed seeing the second if we had known this before. It is such an interesting experience, a feeling of travelling through space although your reclining chair does not move at all!

Following this Afternoon Tea was served in the Queens Room and this was very well attended. White gloved waiters moved between the tables serving from platters of dainty crustless sandwiches, scones with jam and clotted cream and delicous cakes accompanied with plenty of tea from the very observant waiters. My only complaint was that very small tables were set for four and there was a little juggling of plates required.

We moved on to the pub to observe a very popular trivia quiz before changing for our second formal night.

We started in the Winter Garden for a pre dinner cocktail and were entertained by the RADA group on board who performed a Passion and Piano recital consisting of the recitation of 20 poems accompanied by the pianist. It was a very professional performance with some humour, but again only a small number of attendees, such a shame.

Dinner this evening was a huge improvement on previous evenings. I chose the vegetarian main course as my starter, a fresh asparagus mousse followed by a rack of lamb. This was cooked exactly to my liking and was followed by flambed bananas, all quite delicious.

The double espresso coffee that I had after the meal was by far the best coffee avalable on the ship. By comparison the coffee served elsewhere was really poor quality. I presume the after dinner coffee is prepared to order, it does make a difference to the quality and taste.

We went to the Royal Court Theatre after dinner to see a ’new’ Cunard show - Viva Italia. The costumes and quality of dancing and singing were superb and the cast richly deserved the extended applause they received.

We finished the evening in the Casino where I discovered the delights of playing Black Jack!
