Day 2 Cunard Queen Mary 2 Blog

Woke early after a disturbed sleep. Mattress was rather lumpy so I asked the stateroom attendant if she could do something about it, which I am pleased to say she did and I slept very well for the rest of the voyage.

Went for a walk around the Promenade Deck before breakfast. Three times round is the equivalent of a mile and this proved to be a very popular form of excercise for many guests.

Onto the Brittania Restaurant for breakfast where we were quickly seated at a table for two on the balcony and were very well looked after by our waitress. Eggs Benedict was our choice and although tasty was not very well presented. Coffee was ok, but not very fresh.

We then went on to explore the ship properly for the first time. The interior architecture of The Queen Mary II is quite spectacular in a classical art deco style. The public areas are spacious with high ceilings and beautiful engraved glass and artwork and lots of Cunard memorabilia decorating the open spaces and walkways. It was very informative to stop and read the history of the company together with the snapshot stories from past guests.

All the public rooms have comfortable sofas, tables and chairs and were all in use by guests chatting and reading. There were plenty of staff waiting at tables and everyone seemed very happy.

In the main lobby as well as a selection of shops there were sale tables out each day promoting different products. Towards the end of the voyage the prices got lower and lower as they were trying to sell everything prior to the refit.

We stopped and enjoyed lunch in the Golden Lion pub where a jazz band provided excellent entertainment. The food was simple pub fare - ploughmans, fish and chips or dish of the day.

We then made our way to the Planetarium - Illuminations - where we saw an excellent film ’In Search of Life’. Leaning back in the very comfortable armchairs to view the film above was quite a surreal experience, something unique to the Queen Mary and very enjoyable.

This afternoon, there was an optional Veuve Clicquot afternoon tea, for which there was a charge of $27 per person. It was nicely set out in the Winter Garden with a harp accompaniament, but I did think it was rather expensive as the only difference between this and the regular afternoon tea in the Queens Room, was a glass of Champagne!

We had our first formal night tonight with a Black and White theme which was closely adhered to my the majority of guests and we enjoyed cocktails in the Chart Room before moving to the Queens Room for the Captain’s party.

Champagne and canapes were provided while the Captain introduced all the senior officers, the majority of them from the UK.

We then moved to the Brittannia Restaurant for dinner. We had a new couple join us and had a very enjoyable meal. Service was too quick again so the six of us are determined to slow everything down in future to a pace that allows us to enjoy a relaxing meal.

After dinner we went to the Queen’s Room and a number of couples were enjoying the band and formal dancing. The dance hosts were kept very busy by the single ladies on board.

We then moved into the nightclub G32 where an excellent Caribbean band soon had us dancing until the small hours.
