Cunard Queen Elizabeth Cruise Blog Day 8

Good Afternoon!

Today I am in the beautiful port of Funchal in Madeira. We arrived at 0830 this morning and will depart shortly after 1030pm this evening for Vigo, Spain a distance of approximately 800 nautical miles. One nautical mile equals to 1.15 statute miles.

This morning I went on a Whale and Dolphin shore excursion with my dad. We boarded a catamaran at the marina and set sail around the island. Sadly we only saw 3 or 4 dolphins swimming by briefly as we ran out of time, however we were very lucky to see anything!

So then it was back to the ship to meet my mother and then we all caught the shuttle bus into the city center.
We had a little walk around and stopped at a few cafes and bars and bought a couple of souvenirs. We are planning to explore more of Funchal until around 5 or 6 this evening before returning back to the ship for dinner.

The last shuttle bus back to the ship is at 1930 even though we do not sail until at least 10pm, it is also impossible to walk from central funchal to the ships berth so we would have to take a taxi, but even they are not allowed past the port entrance, only registered Cunard shuttle and tour buses are.

It is lovely and warm here in Madeira, around 21-23 degrees is the mean April temperature, a few clouds are lingering over the mountain, but showers are unlikely.

Our crossing over to Vigo is expected to be a little rough with us sailing further into the Atlantic Ocean than when we made our crossing to the islands. The Captain is hopeful that the sun will stay with us and that it should be relatively warm even though the sea may be a little rough.

Well tonight I will as always be attending the youth club and no doubt all of us teens will end up at the midnight buffet again. Two of teens who I have become good friends of, Jordan and Jasmin, their step-father is actually the Chief Engineer aboard the vessel. However both the girls have now disembarked for their flight home to the UK with their mother.

Tomorrow we have a full day at sea before arriving in Vigo, Spain on Thursday.
