Belmond Afloat in France
The Champagne region is easily accessible via Eurostar to Paris or flight to Paris CDG, with either a further train journey with meet and greet at your end destination, or a private transfer from Paris Gare du Nord or Paris CDG, at no extra cost.
The Pivoine, Belmond Afloat in France
The ‘Pivoine’ was introduced to Belmond’s Afloat in France fleet in 2018 following an extensive rebuild from working barge to luxurious holiday-on-the-water destination. She has been most thoughtfully designed and kitted out, with impeccable attention to detail, whilst maintaining a comfortable and informal style and feel in every aspect.
Accommodation consists of 4 double cabins, each one configurable with a King size bed or two Twin Beds. These cabins are sizeable and spacious, and do not give any indication of being on a boat. The en-suite bathrooms are also very roomy, with a large walk-in raindrop shower, double vanities, thick fluffy towels and bathrobes, slippers, plenty of storage and L’Occitane toiletries. Each cabin is individual in terms of design and décor, with 3 on the lower deck, accessed by a proper staircase, and one on the upper deck, with a panoramic window, and ideal for anyone who needs to remain on one level. One of the cabins also has a large roll-top bathtub.

Your home from home does not finish with your cabin, as there is a very comfortable and spacious living area, adorned with fresh flowers; a dining area and a light and airy lounge area with cosy sofas and chairs and rugs leads out onto a canopied sundeck adjacent to the heated pool, perfect for a couple of strokes, water aerobics, or savouring a glass of champagne from your in-pool perch as your barge saunters along the tranquil canals at a gentle 5mph.
Dining on Pivoine, Belmond Afloat in France
Food is all fresh with locally sourced ingredients typical to the cruising region; as each course is served, your personal chef gives a description of the dish. Breakfast consists of freshly squeezed juice, a selection of cereals, local breads and freshly baked pastries and croissants, and hot dishes cooked specially to order. Lunch is a ‘light’ affair with exquisite salads, perhaps a homemade soup, cheeses, local meats and breads, dessert and accompanied by a complementary wine. (Alternatively, should you simply fancy just a burger, the chef will be more than happy to oblige).

Dinner is four courses, each one paired with wine, sourced and introduced by the Guide, as are the cheeses – not one is repeated unless by request. All meals can be enjoyed either in the dining area or outside on the sun terrace, the choice is yours. All beverages are included; the charming hostesses are ready to serve you your favoured tipple or there is an exceedingly well-stocked drinks cabinet from which you can help yourself.

It is a tranquil existence on board and perfect for anyone yearning peace, relaxation and anonymity. A Bose iPad dock will play your favourite music, there’s a concealed TV set and DVD player, board games, magazines and small library of books, and even painting and drawing materials. WiFi is constant. There are lots of extra touches such as sun creams in the beach towel basket, throws for chilly evenings on deck, USB chargers throughout. Boat enthusiasts can learn from the barge’s captain, enthusiastic fishermen can use the onboard fishing equipment, and for the more active, there are bicycles available at any time (children’s bikes and tandems can be arranged with advance notice),
Off the boat, tours and exploration are led by the ship’s very experienced and knowledgeable Guide, with transportation in a spacious luxury Mercedes minibus. Touring itineraries – and the barge’s sailing schedule – are flexible and are matched with the guests’ preferences. Visits are planned to be as exclusive as possible – e.g. special entry to a Champagne House on its closed day. Other impromptu visits can spring up if the Guide wishes to make a surprise or knows of a special event, and there is a variety e.g. a boatride through the hidden canals of a small town, detour in vineyards for photo-taking, and a secret mystery tour of a horse and cart ride through the champagne vineyards at sunset whilst sipping that liquid gold. Activities such as hot-air ballooning, go-carting, horse-riding, kayaking or golf can also be arranged with an advance request.
At the end of each shoreside visit, the return on board is welcomed by the crew and a fresh drink and canapes.
Each crew member has been specially chosen, and each is charming, intuitive but not intrusive. On Pivione there are 6 crew for the maximum capacity of 8 guests.
For a serene, peaceful, unrushed get-away-from-it-all holiday, in a homely environment where everything is included, this is blissful perfection!
Belmond has a total of 7 luxury barges cruising the French Waterways between April and October each year and ranging from 4 to 12 guests each. Some are for open-bookings and others available for exclusive charter, ideal for friends or families.
