Azamara Journey Cruise Blog Day 5

Azamara Journey Cruise Blog Day 5

I was woken this morning by a lot of rocking and rolling in the stateroom as we sailed beside the coast of Sicily. The sea was very lumpy and I did wonder if we would be able to stop here as it is a tender port. But the Captain’s expertise prevailed, and that of the tender operators and anyone that wanted to go ashore was able to but it was a roller coaster ride each way - great fun!

But before this we had the pleasure of meeting one of the Butlers working on board the Azamara Journey. They provide an exemplary service to the suite guests, as confirmed by my colleague. They really go out of their way to ensure that guests receive the special service that they have been so well trained to provide and nothing is too much trouble for them.

Once our meeting was over we went down to the gangway to take the tender, but were advised that there would be a short wait as the swell had increased to a level that made tendering very difficult. About 20 minutes later we were given the ok to go and the crew assisting all passengers on and off the boat were excellent in the care and attention they provided.

Once on shore in Naxos, Azamara Club Cruises provided a complimentary shuttle bus service to the hilltop town of Taormina, about a 30 minute journey each way. Another ship was anchored alongside the Azamara Journey and they were charging their guests $50 each for this same service!

Taormina is a beautiful hilltop town overlooking the bay and the pedestrianised streets were full of shops, bars and restaurants creating a lovely atmosphere. There is also a very well preserved Amphitheatre and some breathtaking Botanical Gardens. We spent a few hours here and some of us found a little, tucked away, family run Trattoria where we enjoyed a simple but quite delicious meal.

The tender trip back to the ship was memorable but we knew that as long as we followed the tender operators instructions exactly about when to ’jump’ we would be fine and we were.

This evening we were able to dine in the second speciality restaurant Prime C and once again enjoyed another wonderful meal. Service was impeccable and the food excellent. I enjoyed French Onion Soup, Crab Cakes, Fillet Mignon and Chocolate Fondue - all quite delicious.

We then made our way to the Cabaret Theatre for the Broadway Showstoppers Show and this was a high energy performance from the ship’s company and of course Eric who provided a fast paced finale on roller skates - very memorable!

After the show we went up to the Looking Glass for late night cabaret from a guest comedian who was very funny.

Before retiring for the night I collected a Hot Chocolate from the Windows Cafe where self service hot drinks are available all through the night. Room service is also available with a wide selection of food and drink items that can be ordered at any time of day or night - in case anyone is peckish!
