APT River Rhine from Nuremberg to Amsterdam

I was fortunate to travel on the MS Amadante cruise on the River Rhine from Nuremberg to Amsterdam.  I was travelling with APT who offer exclusive departures throughout the year.

The first impression on embarking the ship – which is always so important – was of friendly, courteous service from professional staff accompanied by elegant surroundings.

I was very impressed with my Junior Suite that had spacious wardrobes, a sitting area and floor to ceiling French doors allowing the beautiful views to be seen unhindered.

Of course another important aspect on any cruise is the food and the Amadante certainly didn’t disappoint.  All meals are served in a sophisticated, stylish restaurant with a single sitting, allowing all guests to dine together and you have the opportunity to dine with whoever you like.  The menus provided the opportunity to dine on locally sourced produce that really enhanced the experience of travelling through Europe.

For those that prefer a lighter option at lunch time, a self service selection is available in the lounge, together with excellent quality tea and coffee which you can help yourself to at any time.

The lounge is also where the evening entertainment is held.  This can vary from local folk or dance groups coming on board, to a staff cabaret performed on the last night that was very well received.  On my cruise we also had a very entertaining glass blower provide a demonstration of his craft and the following morning he opened his shop early just for Amadante guests.  It was very well patronised!

Late afternoon onwards every day, there is a pianist playing in the lounge and he continues late into the evening.

Shore excursions are included in the cost of the cruise and are escorted by very knowledgeable local guides who really bring the history and atmosphere of the area to life.  An innovative part of the tour is that everyone is provided with a receiver and headset while the guide has a transmitter.  This allows you to wander around the area taking photos but not missing out on the commentary provided.

Another aspect of the cruise which I really enjoyed was the opportunity to take one of the mountain bikes available, and cycle along the tow bath between Wertheim and Miltenberg a total of 35km.  I was provided with a picnic and with no traffic to negotiate or hills to climb had a very pleasant few hours exploring.

Finally I can highly recommend taking the time to sit on the sun deck and just watch the world go by.  The constantly changing scenery is so fascinating and you see sights that would not be possible by road, as well as the exciting experience of navigating numerous locks and bridges.  On my cruise there were 34 locks and you really get to appreciate the skill of the Captain when moving the boat through such narrow spaces.

Even passing underneath some of the bridges brings it’s own excitement as where necessary the whole of the sun deck was folded down, including the bridge, to allow for a safe passage beneath the bridge.

I had a wonderful time on the Rhine and would highly recommend this type of cruise especially for the opportunity to visit many very picturesque towns and villages.  The boat always moors close to the city centre and you can be exploring as soon as you disembark – it is a great way to travel.
