Found out that the world famous liner - QE2 - is to set sail from Dubai and will be berthed at Cape Town for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Apparently Nakheel, who bought the liner from Cunard for $100 million back in 2007, have run into financial problems after the Dubai property market has dipped. By moving the ship to Cape Town's V&A Waterfront they can generate some much need money.
My worries are that the QE2, a veritable floating museum, will be somewhat disrespected by hoards of football fans. Will they appreciate her ballroom? Marvel at her art-deco features? I'm thinking probably not – just hope the security is tight and those football fans are well behaved….still is this a better fate that having her funnel cut off and replaced with a penthouse – as per the original plans for her Dubai berthing as a floating hotel?
