OUR RELIANCE ON THE INTERNET AT LAND AND SEA

Today we arrived in the office and our Internet connection was down. This is usually rectified by a quick re-boot of the router and all is well - however today this didn't remedy it and after a call to the IT team, it seems the problem was a lot more serious than that. Without our broadband line we are literally totally cut off - we use it to "dial in" to our head office and their network, so without it we can do very little.

It made me think about wi-fi and Internet connections onboard ships. Many of them nowadays have Internet cafes, with many more still offering wi-fi in public rooms and even your staterooms.

When I was on Crystal Symphony last year it was nice to be able to update my travel blog and let friends and family keep up to date with our cruise, and even managed to up load a few photos too.

Is this a good thing? When onboard do you use the ships wi-fi to check emails or would you rather be cut off from everyone and everything like was the norm a few years ago? Are you happy with the costs the cruise lines charge for Internet access?

Sometimes it's good to be totally cut off from the outside world and away from work and email and other online distractions. However today I would love a good wi-fi or broadband signal as there is only so much tidying up of the office we can do! I do have a little dongle (no sniggering at the back!) that I can use to connect but it's very slow! Might as well make the guys a coffee!
