No matter which corner of the globe you choose to discover, after exploring ashore, you will always appreciate Minerva’s stately comforts: a relaxed lounge with entertainment, well-stocked library, restaurants, gym, Wheeler bar and Shackleton’s bar. An elegant environment in which polished wood and gleaming brass are complemented by works of art and fresh flowers.

Swan Hellenic’s long established and renowned guest speaker programme illuminates days at sea while open-seating dining means you can ponder ancient mysteries and contemporary issues with like-minded travellers as well as your fellow guest speakers

Evenings include fine dining, classical concerts and after-dinner talks, plus occasional entertainment from ashore.

Swan Hellenic’s itinerary in the South Shetland Islands begins with a stay in Buenos Aires, including a city tour and tango show. The cruise includes a call at Elephant Island where the guides will describe vividly what life was like for the members of Shackleton’s Endurance expedition who survived here for over four months before being rescued. As you approach the White Continent, train your binoculars on colonies of adélie and gentoo penguins, or the blue-eyed shags that nest on Petermann Island.

Our signature cruise aboard Minerva takes you to the wilderness of Antarctica. Three days in Buenos Aires before you embark and the optional Iguazu Falls tour allow you to really explore this area.

The basics

Minerva entered service in 1996 and after a short period sailing as Explorer II, she has re-entered the market for the resurrected Swan Hellenic brand. Following refurbishment Minerva is once again cruising the world’s oceans. At only 12,500 tonnes, and with a crew of 160, she offers her 199 guests a stylish cruise. Minerva is a double hulled Ice Class vessel.

We like

Minerva has a country house hotel feel about her. Her small size allows her to get into ports of call that larger ships cannot access. Her size also creates a very social atmosphere on board and it is easy to get to know your fellow guests. Great for single travellers too.

What you should know

There are only 12 suites with balconies, so we would recommend you book early if you want one of these grades of cabin. Cruises to Antarctica are limited in numbers, so again, book early.
