Check-in was very fast and without incident. On this occasion there was a fast channel for Elite and Concierge passengers though it was not marked as such. However embarkation was being delayed as the ship was undergoing a deep clean. The facilities at the berth in Southampton are not the best so a couple of thousand people milling around made the place uncomfortable.

My holiday got off to a worrying start as I had bought a new sat-nav that took me via a different route to my old one - but we got there in about the same time. This time I was parked immediately opposite the entry doors to the terminal and not a couple of hundred yards astern of the ship. But the queues!

My first Celebrity cruise and I chose the ’Solstice’ for a Mediterranean cruise in June sailing from Barcelona. I found the ship very comfortable, no huge open spaces and lots of small quiet areas to sit so the ship never felt as full as it actually was.

Cruising from South Africa is an expensive experience, but after celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary last year on the Mediterranean (maiden voyage), my wife and I have booked a cruise to take our daughters and son-in-laws (and very new grandson) on holiday of a lifetime on the Celebrity Equinox in July 2012 (Greek Isles & Turkey), and the opportunity to build some of the most incredible memories for us as a family.

The flight arrangements worked like clockwork and all the transfers were successful - in massive, gas-guzzling (and very luxurious) vehicles.
