Pass medieval towns and verdant vineyards as you explore Old Europe on a timeless river-cruise along the Danube.
You are likely to begin your Danube River cruise holiday by spending a couple of days exploring the vibrant city of Budapest. Literally split in two by the wide Danube River, the Hungarian capital provides the perfect setting for a stroll along the river. You will also want to save some time to discover the National Opera House, Parliament Building and the Chain Bridge, just three of the city's most famous landmarks. Before setting sail through the charming Danube bend, take one last look at the historical city of Budapest, with the magnificent hillside view from Fishermen's Bastion and Matthias Church.
The following day you'll arrive in Vienna, home to some of Europe's most spectacular architecture, like the Opera House dotted along the Ringstrasse and the imposing St Stephan's Cathedral. If you fancy indulging in a musical concert in the evening, there is no better place than the home of Mozart himself.
The spectacular landscape of the Wachau Valley guides you into the ornate town of Melk, which is where you'll find a number of elaborate frescoes on display at the Benedictine abbey. And then it is on to Passau, located on the confluence of the Inn, Ilz and Danube Rivers. Passau is also home to Europe's largest church organ, the 17,000-pipe behemoth inside St Stephan's Cathedral. More church spires beckon on Regensburg, one of Europe's best-preserved medieval cities.
Not long after, your river-cruise ship will turn off the Danube and onto the Main-Danube canal, which runs for 106 miles between Kelheim on the Danube and Bamberg on the Main. This canal allows for river travel from the North Sea to the Black Sea. Your final destination of Nuremberg awaits, from where you can tour the imperial castles and the Palace of Justice.
If you are not ready to head home from your Danube River cruise holiday just yet, then why not take a short extension in Prague to discover more of Europe's culture and ancient history.
