The seven Canary Islands are scattered some 70 miles off the coast of Morocco and can be reached from the UK in a seven- to 14-day cruise.
An excellent option for those in search of some winter sun without the hassle of longhaul travel, the Canaries offer honey-coloured beaches, stark volcanic landscapes, unesco-listed old towns, wooded valleys and rugged ravines.
Also off Morocco is the Portuguese Island of Madeira, where unspoiled countryside, farms and vineyards vie with mountains, pine forests, waterfalls and cliffs to grab visitors’ attention. Ships berth a gentle 20-minute walk from the capital Funchal, whose cobblestone streets are littered with pavement cafes.
Walk a little further and you can take the cable car up to beautiful Monte to see the Church of Our Lady. The views alone are well worth the climb, and you can ride back down on a wickerwork toboggan.
Both the Canaries and Madeira are year-round destinations, with the majority of cruises taking place between autumn and spring.

Azamara is a deluxe new cruise line for discerning travellers interested in reaching out-of-the-ordinary destinations without sacrificing high standards of service. A butler service is provided in for Club Suites guests, shore excursions are designed to let guests do more than merely scratch the surface of each destination, ’enrichment programmes’ offer everything from culinary to photographic explorations, two speciality restaurants serve excellent meals, and live entertainment can be enjoyed nightly.
Azamara Cruises consists of two intimate ships, Azamara Journey and Azamara Quest. Each can carry 710 fortunate guests and because they are smaller and sleeker than larger cruise ships, they can sail to ports that others simply cannot reach.
